Children from The Mirabel Foundation had the opportunity to practice their basketball skills within a team environment last week at Red Energy Arena.

Mirabel assists children who are in kinship care by providing support and opportunities to ensure their families thrive.

The programs allow vulnerable children to be part of the local community by participating in a range of activities.

Kaylene McKay, Education Coordinator at The Mirabel Foundation connected with Red Energy Arena to give the children an opportunity to learn the ropes of basketball and practice their ball skills.

“The children are a great group of energetic kids, and they love basketball,” Kaylene says.

“We were looking for somewhere that we could get them active – a place where there are teams and a competition, so they can see how it all works.

“We want to get them involved in the community.”

Ben Harvey, Commercial Partnerships and Community Manager at Red Energy Arena recognises the importance of supporting organisations like Mirabel – making sports accessible to children from all backgrounds.

“We’re all about community – it’s great to see the place filled with kids, families, and friends, and to see these kids exposed to the game of basketball. Today’s a special day,” he said.

Watching the children courtside, General Manager of Sport at Red Energy Arena, Ben DeAraugo felt proud to be able to make a difference in the children’s lives.

“There are so many benefits to community sport – it’s such a safe and healthy environment to be in,” says Ben.

“I love seeing the kids running around with smiles on their faces.”

For Kaylene and The Mirabel Foundation, it’s more than just about the sport for these children.

“Community assets like Red Energy Arena help change people’s lives – to be part of a team is like a family. It not only gives them skills, but a feeling of belonging.”
